5 consejos para administradores Elxis

Small but important Elxis features useful to administrators.

Elxis has several tools and options not visible on first sight. When we work on Elxis we mostly focus on creating categories, articles and menus and not the small details. Others don't use some options by the fear not to break something. In this article we will shed some light on some small but important Elxis features and reserve for more on a later article.

Why you shouldn't use external javascript files

Using external javascript files can be harmful to you and your site visitors.

Many websites use javascript files located to an other domain. Usually this happens when we copy-paste ready-to-use code for a script (jquery, slider, gallery, etc) we found on the internet. This practice can lead to many problems and especially to serious security issues for both the site administrator and its visitors. In this article we will refer to the problems that can arise by the use of external js files and what we can do to achieve maximum availability and security.

Plugins installation and integration

How to install a plugin and how to integrate it into an article. Vdeo tutorial.

Plugins are Elxis extensions which are integrated into content articles and therefore are component's content specific extensions. This means that the output of a plugin is being displayed inside articles. You can also display a plugin inside module content the same way as you do for articles. In this case don't forget to enable execution of plugins in module content parameters. You insert the plugin's integration code in WYSIWYG editor in the exact spot you want the plugin to be displayed. Each plugin has its own integration code which you can type directly into the editor or use the Guided input method Elxis provides you for easy integration. This integration code will later be replaced by the actual plugin's output HTML.

Smart administration features

A number of small improvements in administration console make the big difference.

Elxis 4.2 has many small improvements and additions in the back-end section which make the administrator's life simpler. Some of them are not easily noticed, so lets shed some light onto them.

New tools for developers

Take advantage of the new abilities of Elxis 4.2 for developers.

Elxis 4.2 has some new features a developer can use to improve his extensions. Four new parameter types were added which can be used in any extension (module, component, template, plugin, etc). Parameter type of database allows you to perform database queries and display results as a drop down select box. Parameters datetime, date and time display unified date input fields. If an extension having any of these new parameter types is used on an Elxis 4.0 or 4.1 site these elements will be displayed as standard text input boxes (Elxis 4.x fall back support).

Minify and compress CSS and javascript

The Elxis minifier unifies and compressed CSS and javascript files to improve site performance.

The CSS/javascript minifier which introduced in Elxis 4.1 was updated in Elxis 4.2. What the minifier does is to get all CSS and/or javascript files addressed for the document's head section, unifies them into a single file (1 for CSS and 1 for JS), compress them by removing comments and spaces, saves the final file into cached and serve it gunzip compressed (optionally) to the browser. With the minifier instead of having dozens of CSS/JS files in your site's head section you have just 2 files, 1 for CSS and 1 for JS. This means much fewer requests to the server, less bandwidth and thus faster page load.

Fresh look for elxis.org

New site for elxis.org with fresh look and friendly to mobile devices.

After a lot of time we have a fresh new site for elxis.org. This is an update we wanted to do long ago but we didn't have the time to do it. The site now uses the latest Elxis version, it has new, better organized, content, and new look with a responsive design compatible to smart phones and tablets. Elxis.org is now available in 6 languages (English, Greek, Spanish, Italian, German and French) but the main content is available in 2, English and Greek. If you want to help you can translate the English articles -at least the most important ones- to any of the rest 4 languages and send them back to us to publish them. We really want Elxis to speak your native language and your help in this is required. If you look for articles from the old site, you wont find any. That content was considered as outdated and removed from the new site. With the parallel release of Elxis 4.2 and the new site for elxis.org we believe your opinion for Elxis CMS in general to improved.
